Covering an area of 603,700 square kilometres, Ukraine is the second-largest country in Europe. The Dnieper river flows for 2,285 kilometres through Ukraine, dividing the country into east and west.
Owing to the size of the national sales market, the well-educated population and diversified resources such as fertile soil as well as oil and gas reserves, the Ukrainian economy shows great potential. Agriculture remains an important industry, and mechanical engineering, electrical equipment manufacturing and shipbuilding also play a significant role. However, the current political conflicts are negatively impacting the country’s economic development and consumer spending.
Ukraine’s retail landscape is not very strongly developed. The most promising retail formats in the medium term are likely to be supermarkets and smaller independent stores as well as cash-and-carry wholesale stores. The capital city of Kiev is the centre of modern retail in Ukraine. The standard of living and the share of non-food spending are considerably higher here than in the country’s other cities and regions.
