Development of personnel expenses
Our personnel expenses increased by 2.9 percent to €7.5 billion (previous year: €7.3 billion) primarily as a result of restructuring measures. Of this total, €6.1 billion was attributable to wages and salaries, including wage taxes and employees’ contribution to social insurance programmes. The rest was attributable to social welfare contributions, pension expenses and employee benefits.
We encourage our staff to set up their own private pension accounts. Our Group-wide future package provides them with voluntary benefits that exceed collective bargaining standards generally seen in the industry. In 2012, 55,931 employees in Germany took advantage of these benefits (previous year: 57,462 employees). This represents a share of 54.2 percent (previous year: 54.2 percent).
